This monograph provides a theoretical synthesis and proposes a new solution to a scientific problem, consisting of a comprehensive analysis of the patterns underlying the formation and development of the canon law system in Western Europe during the High Middle Ages (12th–14th centuries), as well as an examination of the achievements and future prospects for its study within contemporary historical-legal scholarship. It was determined that the era of legal renaissance in Western Europe was marked by the reception of Roman law, the separation of civil and canon law from theology, the emergence of law faculties and doctoral degrees in both laws in European universities. Gratian's “Decretum” and the “Corpus of Canon Law” in general undoubtedly became the basis of European legal culture. Their content and methodology formed the core of the Western legal tradition.
