The role of emigrant artists in shaping the socio cultural space of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA (the case of E. Kuziv)

Abstract

The study examines the formation of the socio-cultural space of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA during the first half of the twentieth century. The role of institutional and personal factors in preserving national identity and facilitating the adaptation of immigrants is identified. Particular emphasis is placed on the activities of the artistic intelligentsia, specifically musicians (the case of E. Kuziv), who acted as agents of ethno-consolidation and channels of cultural capital. The socio-communicative function of ethnic mass media, notably the Svoboda newspaper, is highlighted as a platform for public discussion and community building amidst interwar transformations.

У тезі досліджено процес формування соціокультурного простору української діаспори в США у першій половині XX ст. Визначено роль інституційних і особистісних чинників у збереженні національної свідомості та адаптації емігрантів. Акцентовано увагу на діяльності мистецької інтелігенції, зокрема музикантів (на прикладі Е. Кузів), які виступали агентами етноконсолідації та трансляторами культурного капіталу. Розкрито соціокомунікативну функцію етнічних мас-медіа, зокрема газети «Свобода», як платформи суспільного діалогу та консолідації української громади в умовах міжвоєнних трансформацій.
