The role of radio broadcasting in the socio-psychological adaptation of the Ukrainian emigration during the crisis events of 1939

Abstract

The abstract examines the role of radio broadcasting as a psychotherapeutic instrument and a tool for the socio-psychological adaptation of the Ukrainian emigration in North America during the crisis events of 1939 (the fall of Carpathian Ukraine and the outbreak of the Second World War). The impact of the sonic environment—comprising native language, Ukrainian music, religious services, and Christmas broadcasts—on mitigating acculturative stress is analyzed. It is established that radio transmissions helped restore a sense of security, provided emotional uplift, preserved cultural traditions, and reconnected emigrants with the sacred while physically detached from their homeland.

У тезах досліджено роль радіомовлення як психотерапевтичного інструменту та засобу соціально-психологічної адаптації української еміграції Північної Америки під час кризових подій 1939 року (падіння Карпатської України та початок Другої світової війни). Проаналізовано вплив звукового середовища (рідної мови, музики, релігійних трансляцій та різдвяних програм) на подолання акультураційного стресу. Доведено, що радіоефір сприяв відновленню відчуття безпеки, емоційному піднесенню, збереженню традицій та підтримці зв'язку із сакральним у ситуації фізичної відірваності від Батьківщини.
