Environmental challenges and economic cooperation between Ukraine and the EU: prospects for sustainable development

Abstract

The article analyzes Ukraine's cooperation with the EU, which began with the 1994 Partnership Agreement and reached a new level after the signing of the 2014 Association Agreement. The impact of this agreement on Ukraine's domestic and foreign policy is examined, in particular in the context of sustainable development and environmental security. The role of international treaties in regulating environmental policy is examined, including the principles of preventive measures and rational use of natural resources. negatively on the relevant provisions in the agreements, the environmental situation is complicated by the conflict between the economic interests of developed countries and the need for environmental protection. The impact of international law on the development of Ukraine's energy policy, its integration into the pan-European energy space, the transition to renewable energy sources and the role of financing such EU projects is considered. The challenges of Ukraine in the field of international environmental security are outlined, in particular the insufficient effectiveness of international organizations in combating environmental crimes. Support for cooperation with the EU to preserve the environment is emphasized. Стаття аналізує співпрацю України з ЄС, яка почалася з Угоди про партнерство 1994 року та вийшла на новий рівень після підписання Угоди про асоціацію 2014 року. Розглянуто вплив цієї угоди на внутрішню і зовнішню політику України, зокрема в контексті сталого розвитку та екологічної безпеки. Досліджено роль міжнародних договорів у регулюванні екологічної політики, включаючи принципи превентивних заходів і раціонального використання природних ресурсів. Незважаючи на відповідні положення в угодах, екологічна ситуація ускладнюється конфліктом між економічними інтересами розвинених країн і потребою охорони довкілля. Розглянуто вплив міжнародного права на розвиток енергетичної політики України, її інтеграцію в загальноєвропейський енергетичний простір, перехід на відновлювані джерела енергії та роль ЄС у фінансуванні таких проєктів. Окреслено виклики України у сфері міжнародної екологічної безпеки, зокрема недостатню ефективність міжнародних організацій у протидії екологічним злочинам. Підкреслено важливість співпраці з ЄС для збереження довкілля.
