Abstract

The article examines the economic legacy of D. I. Mendeleev and the impact of the customs tariff of 1891, developed by him, on trade and economic relations between the Russian Empire and Germany in 1893–1894. The study analyzes the prerequisites for the introduction of protectionist customs policy, its role in escalating trade confrontation between the two states, and its consequences for foreign trade. Special attention is paid to the assessment of the customs tariff as an instrument of state economic regulation at the end of the nineteenth century.
