This article is devoted to examining the challenges involved in studying violent behavior and the crime of homicide in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. Various approaches to the study of violent activity and fluctuations in homicide rates have been analyzed. The article employs linguistic, general scientific, system-functional, quantitative, and comparative research methods. It has been established that medieval and modern perceptions of homicide differ significantly: a) within the medieval value system, violence was linked to a culture of honor and a masculine ethic; b) the Middle Ages were characterized by a social and legal tolerance for crimes committed in response to public humiliation; c) medieval perpetrators of homicide only partially correspond to the modern archetype of the criminal as a marginalized, immoral, and socially dangerous individual. The authors consider it established that the decline in violence – primarily the homicide rate – throughout the Middle Ages and the modern era was neither a linear nor a continuous process. It is concluded that the postulation of a decline in lethal crime as a consistent, progressive evolution of social relations is erroneous and has not been substantiated by the sources.
