The dissertation analyzes the state of scientific development of the problem of medieval canon law, the main directions of modern research and the latest approaches to the interpretation of legal monuments. It is concluded that the era of the legal renaissance in Western Europe was characterized by the reception of Roman law, the differentiation of civil and canon law from theology, and the emergence of law faculties and doctoral degrees in both legal systems within European universities. Gratian's “Decretum” and the “Corpus of Canon Law” in general undoubtedly became the basis of European legal culture. Their content and methodology formed the core of the Western legal tradition.
